Andasibe National Park, Madagascar

Mango Opinion

This lodge has a lovely forest setting with rooms scatted over the property with sitting areas out front. Greenery is beautiful. Food was just ok. This is a family friendly lodge with families rooms and a pool!

Nestled in a lush eucalyptus plantation, Vakona Forest Lodge offers comfort, stunning scenery and a great location from which to explore the fascinating region. Individual bungalows have been carefully scattered throughout the grounds to ensure guests have spectactular views, privacy and spacious accommodation. They all have ample room, comfortable beds, en-suite bathroom and a safe. The 28 bungalows, offer a variety of bed types to facilitate all travelers from individuals to families. The main lodge houses a restaurant that serves a fusion of French, Asian and Malagasy dishes.

The lodge is close to two protected areas, the Perinet Special Reserve and Mantadia National Park. The reserves are full and abundant with fauna and flora characterizing the eastern part of Madagascar. This region hosts many endemic species such as the famous Indri-indri. In the early mornings you wake to the song of the indri, which echoes throughout the local area. This is the best location to see this impressive species in all of Madagascar.

There are many other species of Lemur and the most commonly seen include the diademed sifaka, common brown lemur and eastern woolly lemurs, fat tailed dwarf and mouse lemurs at night. There are some wonderful chameleons in the reserve including the two-foot long Parson’s Chameleon, tiny nose-horned and brookesia chameleons. Endemic Frogs are plentiful and birding highlights include Madagascar blue pigeon, Madagascar long-eared owl, Madagascar starling and numerous species of vanga, coua and the shy ground rollers.
