Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Gold price level

Mango Opinion

About an hour's drive from the Volcanos National Park's the gorilla trekking headquarters, Virunga Lodge's promitory setting with views of the volcanos and lakes is unsurpassed.  In addition to gorilla and golden monkeys treks, the lodge offers a tour of the adjacent village as well as crater walks, all within easy access of the lodge.  Weather permitting the local village provides a traditional dance performance.  The only downside of this lodge is the distance from the lodge to the headquarters.

Virunga Lodge is set on a high hilltop with breathtaking views of the Virunga volcanoes and Lakes Ruhondo and Bulera. The Lodge is roughly a three hour drive from Kigali, an hour from the Uganda border and around an hour from the start of the gorilla tracking activities in Parc National des Volcans. The region is a series of beautiful emerald green peaks and lush undergrowth that visitors trek through to find the small family groups of mountain gorillas.

Each of the ten luxurious bandas has a private terrace from which one can watch the sunrise over the dramatic landscape of mountains and lakes, an individual fire place an a shower room with a double vanity.  The lodge offers personal butler service for all of its guests.

The main attraction of Virunga Lodge is its proximity to the Virungas and the Parc National des Volcans where clients trek on foot to see the magnificent Mountain Gorilla - perhaps one of the most dramatic, thrilling and poignant wildlife experiences possible. There are, however, a myriad of other excursions on offer to our clients. These include treks to see the fascinating Golden Monkeys, which are found in the bamboo forests on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains. They provide an entertaining viewing as they leap from tree to tree and frolic in the open clearings of the forest.
