Karisia Walking Expedition

Tumaren Reserve, Kenya

Bronze price level

Mango Opinion

One of our favorite ways to explore Northern Kenya.  There is definitely no better way to gain insight into the Samburu culture than hiking across the Laikipia Plateau with a Samburu warrior. As your personal guide, he will impart his personal knowledge about the wildlife,  conservation and the entire ecosystem which sustains the all creatures, great and small. These safaris also offer an opportunity to visit a village and school which we highly recommend.  Extremely flexible, you can choose how long and how much luxury you want to include.

A Walking Safari is the ideal means by which to travel through the beautiful scenery of Kenya. We walk where no car will go, exploring new country every day with camels as our friendly beasts of burden. Expedition level camps use light mountain tents and a basic camp that can be taken down and set up very quickly.

Each day you will set out after breakfast for a few hour walk in search of game and exploring the area en-route to your next camp. Along the way you will be looking for Eland, Steinbuck, Giraffe, Waterbuck, Grevy's Zebra.  You will also be looking from high open points for Elephants. After a refreshing arrival lunch and short rest, we will head out on a short walk looking for game and getting a feel for the country.

The pack camels with our camping equipment make a more direct route so they will have arrived before us and set up most of camp before our arrival. After lunch we will follow our routine of resting, reading or badminton for the energetic and later another walk in the evening to a pretty spot for sundowner cocktails.

One morning at the beginning or end of your 3 day trail, you have the opportunity to visit a local secondary school, remote Manyatta or local celebration depending on what’s going on.
