Sand Rivers Selous
We love Sand Rivers! The rooms are very comfortable and have great views of the Rufiji River. The staff and wildlife guides are a huge part of your stay! — Mango's view
Sand River Selous was built several years ago overlooking the Rufiji River. The site was carefully chosen for its isolation, diversity of game, ecosystems and landscapes. Sand River has an unusual combination of steep wooded hills, open Miombo woodland and grassy plains and marshes interlaced with lakes and dry sand rivers. This scenic area boasts an impressive variety of game, bird life and wild flowers.
On all your explorations, you will be led by one of the lodges five guides. Each has worked at the lodge since the beginning and several worked as rangers in the Selous for years before, or as guides on specialist walking safaris before Sand Rivers existed. All of them are exceptional game spotters, know the area and its wildlife back to front and have stories and tales to tell
The lodge is comprised of eight secluded cottages all with en-suite bathrooms and stunning views over the Rufiji River. In addition to a large open bar and dining area, there is also a swimming pool set in the shade of a baobab tree on the banks of the river, in which to cool off in the heat of the day.
In addition to game drives in specially adapted open vehicles, Sand River Selous offers a combination of activities including walking, fly camping and fishing for both tiger fish and catfish. Guests enjoy boating down the Rufiji River, past pods of shiny hippo and sunbathing crocodile.
Relax while enjoying breakfast in the bush, reading in an armchair on the veranda, or lying by the Sand River Selous pool.
