Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

Olivers Camp

We like this tented camp run by local Maasais in Tarangire National Park. This property is small in size, offering guests an intimate experience. September, October and November are the best months to visit Tarangire as the migratory routes of many animals shift into the park.

Olivers Camp may be a bit rustic for some standards. Walkways through camp are on the ground and the tents have en-suite bathrooms complete with a short drop toilet and hot bucket bush shower.

 — Mango's view

At the heart of Maasailand, east of the Great African Rift Valley, lies a National Park of wild beauty and diverse natural history. Tarangires rolling landscape combined with the wildlife concentrations in the dry seasons has endeared this area to visitors seeking solitude and spectacle.

Located in the middle of the Tarangire wilderness, Olivers Camp has one of the most wonderful settings one could imagine and offers an unparalleled bush experience. From the camp, a much wider eco-system can be overlooked: the Ngorongoro highlands, the Great Rift Valley, the Lame Manyara region and of course Tarangire National Park itself. This camp is ideally placed to access the yearly migrations of wildlife throughout the ecosystem, and to view the impressive concentrations at waterholes for a five to six month season each year.

Being in the wilderness zone allows the camp the freedom to offer walking excursions close to the camp, as well as longer walking adventures in the endless woodlands and plains habitat that surround. Off road driving in open vehicles is another privilege enjoyed in this area.

Only eight guest tents are available. Solid wooden furniture, beautiful cloth and practical en-suite facilities are expertly maintained in each of the tents. The drinks and library tent offer a relaxing respite after open vehicle or on foot adventures out in the surrounding national park. Cold drinks, camp fires and outstanding hosts in such settings combine to make any visit an intimate learning experience for which many a visitor has returned.

The focal point of the camp each evening is still the stone fireplace which is close to the library, sitting and dining tents. From here the views are superb. There is no better forum for relaxed conversation and animated reflection on the days activities, and no safari is complete without such an experience.
