Part of the virtually unknown Mafia archipelago that lies south of Zanzibar, Chole is a tiny tropical island located in the largest marine park in East Africa, a few clicks off the Tanzanian coast.

Set sail for its mangrove-lined shores, and as the first treehouses hove into view, the last vestiges of the 21st century recede: no roads, no cars, no electricity, no computers, no mobile phones. Just a star-spangled sky, flickering candles, superb food, great company, and the timeless luxuries of space, privacy, and utter peace.

Chole Mjinis seven unique tree houses are set in attractive tropical gardens and ancient Persian ruins left by former Sultans of Kilwa and Zanzibar. Each is designed individually and built using local materials and craftsmanship. Some are built around baobab trees, others set in the mangroves, with four-poster beds and with fantastic views. Each tree house has a private garden with toilet and shower at ground level.

Bathrooms take the form of large outdoor bamboo-lined bathroom areas on the ground adjacent to the tree houses. The toilets are clean composting toilets, essentially modified long drops. The shower involves the lighting of a paraffin wick in a sheath around the water pipe. Flames heat the water directly, giving a good hot shower. All this takes place in the great outdoors.

Meals are served in a charming open sided building, also housing a lounge area and upstairs bar, with beautiful views across Chole Bay. Meals consist mainly of fish, octopus, lobster and other seafood, prepared in traditional Chole Swahili style.

Mafia Island Marina Park is famous as a world class scuba diving destination. Beyond diving and snorkeling on one of the best reefs in the world, some highlights include relaxing on the renowned beaches, hiking around the island, fishing, or exploring the town of Kilondoni, capital of Mafia Island.
