A restored Victorian home managed by the owners with great care. Guests enjoy the well-kept evergreen gardens and a lovely Ostrich farm. — Mango's view
Adley House in Oudtshoorn is a magnificent Victorian home built in 1905 by Sidney Herbert Adley during the Ostrich Feather Boom. Hilda and Pieter Retief started the Adley House Bed and Breakfast in 1994. They manage Adley House personally, and as true South Africans and residents in Oudtshoorn for over thirty years, they are able to not only give you a warm welcome and real South African hospitality, but also answer all the questions you may have.
Adley House has fourteen large en-suite individually decorated rooms to make your stay a pleasant one. All rooms offer modern, quiet remote controlled air-conditioners, remote controlled TV, fully stocked fridges, tea and coffee trays, overhead fans and electric blankets, telephones and fax facilities. There is also a daily laundry service available.
Relax in the two swimming pools to cool you down on our lovely hot summer and winter days. There are log fires in winter. Enjoy the well-kept evergreen gardens and the large property of 5000 square meters.
Hilda bakes fresh bread or Vetkoek every morning - and in the evening, on request, she may braai (barbecue); or you can have a four course meal - real South African style. Ostrich steaks are a specialty.
Activities available in the area include the Cango Caves. These are mysterious and breathtaking limestone formations in a wide variety of natural colors, a subterranean wonderland, close to Oudtshoorn. Ostrich farms are prevalent in the area. Numerous rivers, streams and falls have their origins in the surrounding Swartberg, Outeniqua, Kamanassie mountain ranges. Waterfalls abound, and the visitor is fortunate to safely visit two examples at the Vrede and Meiringspoort Falls.
